Yarrow is the semi-rural community at the west end of Chilliwack, below Vedder Mountain on the edge of the Sumas Prairie. It exists because the province dyked the Vedder River through the Vedder Canal in 1924, and from 1928 Mennonite families bought the reclaimed land and built the farming village that Yarrow still is at heart: dairy, poultry, berries and hay, with about 3,000 residents, a main street of older homes and shops, and Yarrow Days on the first weekend of June.
Housing here runs from farmhouses and 1940s to 1960s bungalows to newer acreage homes and the Yarrow Ecovillage, which means big lots, outbuildings and the accumulation that comes with them. Barn and shed cleanouts, old fencing and gates, farm scrap metal and yard waste in volumes the green cart will not touch are the typical calls. Clean wood and green waste go to Parr Road, scrap metal to Bailey, and both are quoted separately so the clean load stays cheap.
Bailey Landfill is about 12 kilometres and twenty minutes from Yarrow by road, which is why a hauler groups Yarrow with Sardis and Vedder Crossing on the same route. A full truck from Yarrow is priced like one in town; a single small item may wait a day or two for a route day.
